No U-Turn
My husband and I were heading home after doing some business and we came to a new road layout and because we were talking and not paying full attention, my husband who was driving made a wrong turn and we found ourselves on the motorway heading in the wrong direction. We couldn't just do a U-Turn but instead we had to drive to the next slip road and make the turn to cross over in order to change direction. My husband blamed me for talking and distracting him, but even though I had apologised he was the one driving the car - so he was the one who made the wrong turn and now it was only him who could pull off at the next slip road so that we could be facing in the right direction towards home.
This made me think of how easy it is to take a wrong turn and find ourselves heading fast in the wrong direction. We can be going along nicely and all of a sudden something can take our eyes of our destiny and we just turn to the left or the right to soon. For a Christian the type of thing that can distract us and cause us to take our eyes of Jesus and our God given destiny, is being hurt, disappointed, upset, complaining, arguing, strife, being offended, falling into temptation and so on. We can very quickly find that we have gone off the path of joy and victory and heading in the direction of destruction, depression, confusion and sorrow.
Every Christian must be alert and pay close attention to every decision and choice. Like my husband was responsible for which direction the car was travelling because he was the one in the driver's seat. Blaming me for talking and distracting him, didn't help him get back in the right direction. Only he could turn the car around. The only way off the motorway is the slip road. Jesus is like the slip road, He is the way the truth and the life.
When we are travelling down the motorway and we want to change direction we must slow down, indicate left and move into the slip road. This is like repentance. The true meaning of repentance is not just to feel sorry about something but actually take action to turn around and change direction. By calling on the Name of Jesus, and acknowledging that we are going in the wrong direction, and taking the way out that he has provided by following his road and his path, he leads us around and places us in the right direction again.
Maybe you don't know Jesus as your own personal Lord and Saviour, and you are travelling fast and furious down the broad road of life, just taking whatever comes your way and trying to make the most of it, totally unaware that its leading to the dead end of destruction. Maybe you just don't care anymore, and have lost hope. But Jesus is offering you a way out today. Jesus is the way to a better road to travel, one that has a good destiny. A road that leads to peace, freedom and eternal life with God in heaven.
Matthew 7 v 13 and 14 tells us that Jesus said "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it"
Jesus is offering the gift of Salvation to every person. Just like a car cannot drive itself, only the driver is responsible for what direction the car travels in, so we are each responsible for our own lives. Every one has the choice to accept or reject Jesus as the Son of God.
Religion cannot save us, we cannot save ourselves by good works.
There is no-one without sin, so whether we think we are not good enough or we think we are not bad enough to receive Salvation, this wonderful gift is offered to everyone. It is our choice.
If you are on that wide road of life will you slow down, indicate and turn to Jesus today and accept his Gift of Salvation?
Romans 10v13 tells us that “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
Ephesians 2v 8 tells us "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God"
How do you receive this gift of God, called the gift of Salvation?
The good news of the Gospel is that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. God showed His love for us by sending His Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Though the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Salvation is a gift–we do not earn it or deserve it, but God gives it freely to all who believe in Him, and through Jesus we have peace with God.
Jesus didn’t stay dead–He came back to life on the third day, and God exalted Him to the highest place, and He rules as Lord over all. When we choose to accept Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf, we receive God’s forgiveness of our sins, and we surrender control of our lives to Jesus.
What happens then is our dead spirits come to life, and we begin a relationship with God that continues for the rest of our lives and into eternity. We are adopted into God’s family as His children, so we no longer fear God but instead run to Him as our Father. God welcomes us into His presence every day, and His Spirit lives inside us, empowering us to accomplish God’s work here on earth and teaching us more and more about our heavenly Father. We can now boldly approach God’s throne of grace to find help in our time of need. And though we may still miss the mark of God’s perfection and holiness, when we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all wrongdoing. He frees us to live the life that He created us to live, filled with amazing projects, dreams, and good works that God prepared in advance for us.
