The Hem of His Garment

The Hem of His Garment

I love this account of the woman with the issue of blood who touched the hem of Jesus' Garment knowing that she would be healed in Mark chapter 4 vs 25 - 34

Lets read it together and have a closer look into it :-

"And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse"

We notice here that it doesn't tell us her name, but we can see and recognise that her identity was more to do with her physical state. She was probably known locally as the woman who has the issue of blood, because in that time and under the Jewish law she was called ceremonially unclean, which meant she was not allowed to associate with other people etc, she would have spent her time in isolation.   We also see that she had done everything in the natural to try and get better, but only grew worse.  We can imagine how desperate she was both physically and mentally.  There are many today who could identify with this woman.  Lets read on further :-

"When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.  For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole."

This woman being a Jew and knowing the Jewish law, understood that on the hem of the garment was tassels sown with special colour of threads which represented the Covenant they had with God.  She also would have been told about the coming Messiah.  So when we read here that she said "If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole"  what she was really doing was recognising both the Covenant of God and that Jesus was the Messiah - the Living Word - (As we are told in John ch.1 v 14 "The Word became flesh" - talking about the Son of God who is the Word of God who was born as a man)  What she was doing was letting go of her own lost identity and taking hold of His Identity - The Messiah, The Saviour, The Healer, The Deliverer.  This faith caused her to press in through the crowd even though she was breaking the law.  Everything we receive from God we receive in Spirit - faith takes us beyond the natural reasoning and into the realm of God  where all things are possible.  Faith caused this woman to rise up and press in to go to Jesus and look what happened:-

"and straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.  And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?  And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?  And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.

We see here that even though there were many physically touching Jesus only this little woman really touched him.  That's because God is Spirit and everything we receive from him we receive through faith which comes from our spirit connecting with his spirit - when we take hold of his Word and his Promises by faith we are actually spiritually touching him or connecting with him and we cannot connect with him and not be touched with his power.  Healing and prayer is not like a magic wand rather HEALING is WHO JESUS IS - HE IS THE HEALER - the Word of God is medicine or healing to our flesh (Proverbs 4v22)
This woman believed in her heart (in her spirit not just in her mind) and confessed with her mouth that Jesus was her healer.

But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.  And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

Isn't this a beautiful picture of the personal relationship that we can have with our Heavenly Father through Jesus - this woman didn't ask anyone to help her or pray for her - she simply took God at his Word and believed and received her healing.  This woman didn't just receive healing in her body but also restoration of her life.  Jesus is the Prince of Peace, He is the Healer and He has provided everything we need by his death and resurrection.  God wants us to come to him and has made the way through Jesus, He wants and desires the best for us.

Maybe you have not heard or do not understand about the healing power and promises of God,  this little woman acted on what she knew - so it makes sense that she could not have acted as she did had she not known about the Messiah and known that she had a Covenant with God.  Sadly many Christians today don't know and haven't heard the Word of God being taught by faith and therefore cannot receive.  They go through life thinking, that if God wants to heal them, then he will come and do it and then think - it must not be God's will to heal me.  We can only have faith for what we know.  The first step is to find out what God has promised through Jesus, and who Jesus is.  Then to believe it and meditate upon it and ask the Holy Spirit to give us a revelation and help us to receive it in our heart our spirit.  Then He will take us by the hand step by step into healing and deliverance.

I wrote this song a few years ago, I hope you enjoy it and that it will help you receive faith for your own situations today. xx
